臺灣第一位抽象畫家莊世和老師於2020年11月18日清晨4點半左右安詳離世，享壽九十八歲。莊老師生前由家人捐贈一批文獻檔案予國立臺灣美術館，對於其創作與臺灣1940-1960藝術思潮與藝術運動的發展之研究提供相當寶貴的資訊。
莊世和1923年出生於台南，幼年隨家人遷居屏東。就讀潮州公學校時即顯露出繪畫天份，其後受到父親的鼓勵，於1938年赴日本川端畫學校就讀，習得素描等基礎繪畫技法，1940年再入東京美術工藝學院純粹美術部繪畫科，1943年再進升至研究科深造，廣泛接觸學習立體派、乃至超現實等日本1930年代以來的前衛藝術之現代主義思潮。
不同於日治時期多數臺灣畫家外光派寫實畫風，莊世和從立體派入手，並廣泛吸收前衛藝術，成為臺灣第一位抽象畫家。自臺灣美術史學家蕭瓊瑞《台灣美術史綱》一書中曾指出，藝術家莊世和極可能是臺灣第一位以非具象作為創作走向的畫家。而學者蔣伯欣於〈前衛先行者—莊世和戰後作精選〉文中亦推論指出，莊氏應可謂為臺灣美術史中第一位抽象畫家。
莊世和1946年自工藝學院純粹美術部研究科畢業後返臺，曾參與何鐵華1952年所創立的「新藝術研究所」，教授並撰文引介立體主義、超現實主義、抽象主義等繪畫形式，為1950年代初期臺灣少數積極推動現代繪畫之臺籍藝術家。莊世和個人創作可分期為：一、立體主義探索時期（1040-1952）； 二、文學內涵的超現實主義時期（1953-1959）; 三、超現實的抽象時期（1961-2020)。國立臺灣美術館典藏其晚年1982年二件〈憶北海道之夜〉與1988年〈山的嗚咽〉抽象與超現實風格之油畫作品。1957年離開台北返回潮州任教，同年創立「綠舍美術研究會」、參與創設1961年「新造型美術協會」及1968年「南部現代美術會」等團體，至晚年仍持續參與地方藝術活動，撰寫藝術家評論，致力於藝術教育與拓展藝術理念的推動，對現代繪畫在南臺灣的推廣傳佈影響至深。
國美館梁永斐館長特別指出，其長子莊正國先生捐贈國美館一批莊世和一生中創作與藝術活動相關之文獻檔案，在莊世和老師逝世前獲得此具研究價值珍貴資料的捐贈，深具意義也令人感念。此批文獻檔案係由文化部委託蔣伯欣完成初步調查整理，包含藝術家記載藝術學習與活動的日記、筆記本、手稿、信件、剪報、圖像、照片、書籍、期刊等文獻資料檔案與物件，對於其創作與臺灣1940-1960藝術思潮與藝術運動的發展之研究提供相當寶貴的資訊。
